"This volcanic island rising straight up from the ocean to 1862 m high Pico Ruivo is full of surprises. It is covered with marked hiking trails. Bursting tropical growth around Seixal, desert near Caniçal, banana plantations covering almost every piece of land on south and little white churches crowning nearby hills. The beach is covered with sharp volcanic rocks or cliffs rising vertically out od the ocean. The wild island is intertwined with water irrigation channels. They are called ”levadas” and bring the water from the mountains to the farming fields. Built in 18th century you are amazed by the extent of the channel system."
